Fire Test on Glass

Protection Levels

When referring to fire rated glazing there are a number of terms, qualities to the glass that can be provided.  These are subdivided into protection levels.

Protection levels are measured in defined time periods of 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes and in terms of either integrity, integrity and insulation or Integrity and Radiation, as designated by the British & European Standards.

Integrity (E)

Integrity, meaning the glazing can withstand the designated minutes against the flames and hot gases penetrating through to the unexposed glass face, i.e. if no flames or hot gases occurred on the non fire side before 1 hour it would be E60 rated.

Radiation(EW)

Radiation and Integrity means the glass offers protection against flames (E) but also the heat that emits from the flame.  Heat radiation through to the non exposed side should remain below temperatures sets by the standards. value of 15kW/m2 reducing the radiated heat to other materials and people.

Insulation(EI)

Integrity and Insulation means the glass has the above qualities of (E)with the additional property of reducing the temperature rise on the non exposed glass face, to below temperatures sets by the standards.
